About us

Russian Helicopters is a leading player in the global helicopter industry, the sole Russian designer and manufacturer of helicopters and one of the few companies worldwide with the capability to design, manufacture, service and test modern civilian and military helicopters. Headquartered in Moscow, we operate five helicopter assembly plants, two design bureaus, two components production plants, one overhaul plant and one helicopter service company providing aftermarket services in Russia and abroad. Although Russian Helicopters was established only in 2007, some of the company’s subsidiaries have existed for more than 60 years.

Russian Helicopters in Numbers

According to our data, there are over 8,500 Russian helicopters currently registered in over 100 countries around the world, representing c.13% of the world’s helicopter fleet.

In 2010, Russian Helicopters products accounted for approximately 85% of all helicopter sales in Russia and the CIS, and 13.5% of worldwide helicopter sales in USD terms.

Russian Helicopters accounts for approximately 27% of the installed global attack helicopter fleet and nearly 26% of the ultra heavy installed fleet worldwide (MTOW of more than 20 tonnes)…

...and c. 36% of the installed medium-lift helicopter fleet worldwide (MTOW of 8 to 15 tonnes).

Company Highlights

We have leading positions in some of the most attractive and highest-growth market segments globally, including:

Key geographies - Number 1 in Russia & CIS

Key product segments – number 1 globally in medium and ultra-heavy segments, and number 1 globally in attack helicopters

We have some of the world’s leading technology and production capabilities, having produced some of the most sought-after helicopters in the world over a period of 60 years, including, today, world leaders, such as:

Mi-8/17 – the world’s most widely operated helicopter in history

Mi-26 – the heaviest-lift helicopter in the world with an unmatched weight-lift of 20 tonnes

Mi-35M – the world’s only helicopter that can be used as both an attack and transport helicopter

We maintain the leading position in the Russian market, capturing approximately 85% of all helicopter sales in Russia and the CIS in 2010...

...and we have leading positions in some of the world’s other fastest growing helicopter markets, such as India and China, and are developing our selling footprint into the core markets of Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

The consolidation of the Russian helicopter industry has created additional benefits for us such as the ability to:

  • Centralise the pricing policy due to elimination of competition between the plants
  • Improve operational efficiencies by realising synergies and eliminating duplications within the group
  • Enhance our product and R&D development capabilities

Our Production Facilities

Our key production subsidiaries include Kazan Helicopters, Rostvertol, Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant, Arsenyev Aviation Company “Progress,” and the Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise. In addition, our Stupino Machine Production Plant and Reduktor-PM produce key components.

Research and Development

The Company has very strong R&D capabilities. Its Mil and Kamov design bureaus are ranked amongst the largest and most respected design facilities in the world. The history of the two bureaus is closely intertwined with the lives of the two men after whom they were named, Nikolai Ilich Kamov and Mikhail Leontyevich Mil, generally considered the fathers of the Russian helicopter industry. Nikolai Kamov, who has been credited with coining the Russian word for helicopter, “vertolyot,” was heavily involved in the theoretical research and production of the autogyro, a predecessor of the helicopter, as early as the 1920s.

Service and Support

With more than 8,500 of our helicopters currently registered throughout the world, we believe we are in a strong position to exploit the aftermarket services and maintenance of our products through a network of mainly third-party service centres around the world. Our support business in Russia consists of the Helicopter Service Company and the Novosibirsk Aircraft Repairing Plant. We work with a wide mainly third party network of 37 Russian and 46 international service centres across the world and supply them with component parts and materials. We are also opening pivot service centres to strengthen our service presence in key growth markets (e.g. India, China, Latin America) and to benefit from important revenue streams for helicopter upgrade and modernisation.
